Just a few weeks ago, there was a major setback for fans of “The Witcher”: Henry Cavill will retire after Season 3. And before we see his successor Liam Hemsworth as Season 4’s Geralt of Rivia, we’ll have to get in between expect a new spin-off series: “The Witcher: Rats“.
Anyone familiar with the “The Witcher” universe should know right away what the offshoot will be about: the rat gang, a group of young criminals who join Ciri (Freya Alan) for a while. We will already get to know the troop in “The Witcher” season 3 – in episodes 7 and 8 Ciri will meet the “Rats” for the first time. The gang will also be there in Season 4.
“The Witcher: Rats” after “The Witcher” Season 3
According to the site, which is always very well informed about “The Witcher” matters is to be expected, that the spin-off, working title Rats, will appear between the third and fourth seasons of the original series. That makes sense, given that Rats is reportedly in pre-production, has a showrunner on board in The Witcher writer Haily Hall, and is due to hit screens in South Africa soon – so it all makes it very likely that Rats ‘ comes to Netflix as the next installment in the fantasy universe after the already wrapped third season of ‘The Witcher.’
The big question, whichever ofcouldn’t be answered yet, but is: will the “Rats” spin-off be an origin story of the group, i.e. about their formation before they met Ciri? Or will the joint adventures of Ciri and the rat gang be featured in the episodes, apart from the main storyline involving Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra)? In the latter case, we should then look forward to seeing Freya Allan again.
The cast of the rat gang
The gang members who will appear in seasons 3 and 4 in the original series are expected to appear in their respective roles in the spin-off. Christelle Elwin (“Half Bad”) plays Mistle, Fabian McCallum (“Rings of Power”) plays Kayleigh, and Juliette Alexandra (“EastEnders”) plays Reef. New cast member Aggy K. Adams (“Oh, Ramona!”) has not yet been confirmed for the role, but Redanian Intelligence believes she will play Iskra.
It’s still unclear who will play the last two members of the rat gang in Netflix’s “The Witcher” universe: Asse and Giselher, the leader of the gang.
Season 3 of The Witcher is coming to Netflix in Summer 2023.
