Empty wine bottles should be disposed of correctly. What should be obvious to many people is always a headache for others. There’s more to consider when disposing of used glass than you might initially think. We’ve put together five of the most common mistakes to avoid.

Some people throw away empty wine bottles for convenience. This is especially a shame because glass cannot be recycled this way. For environmental reasons, used wine bottles should be thrown into the waste glass bin.

To save time, some people throw empty wine bottles into glass containers without distinguishing color. However, as with most wine bottles, colored glass should be disposed of separately from white glass. Unless otherwise stated, blue, red or unidentified bottles refer to green glass containers.

Any stickers and labels may remain on used glass and do not need to be removed separately before disposal. So you can save yourself this time.

To avoid the smell of stale wine in waste glass storage and to prevent attracting swarms of insects, it is recommended to rinse wine bottles briefly and with a little water before disposing of them. This way, you will also prevent possible discoloration of your carrying case in case the red wine bottle tips over while being transported to the waste glass container.

Empty wine bottles can be reused for many creative purposes. Before throwing them away, consider whether you can use them as vases or candle holders. Rare wine bottles can be valuable even when empty or hold a memory of a beautiful moment worth keeping.
