The export of Swiss sweets is increasing

Last year more sweets were exported from Switzerland. Exports of Swiss ‘sugar products’ have increased significantly in 2023. On the other hand, ‘long-life baked goods’ posted losses.

Exports of local ‘sweets’ increased by more than 10 percent last year to 35,275 tonsTrade association Biscosuisse announced this on Tuesday. The United States in particular, the most important export market, contributed to this growth. Domestic sales, on the other hand, decreased slightly in volume by 3.8 percent to 5,240 tons.

Meanwhile, sales of confectionery increased due to price increases at home and abroad. Export revenues increased by almost 16 percent to 329 million francs and in this country there was also a slight increase of 3.6 percent to 77 million francs.

Last year things went slightly worse for producers of long-life baked goods. The total sales volume in 2023 decreased by 4.4 percent to 42,756 tons. Thanks to the price increases, industrial turnover remained stable at 508 million, with domestic turnover accounting for the lion’s share at 427 million.

Among long-life baking products, “biscuits” accounted for almost half of total production, the statement showed. This is followed by the categories “bread-like pastries and cereal bars” with approximately 30 percent and “apéro and savory pastries” and “fresh pastries” with more than 11 percent each.

As a trade association, Biscosuisse brings together the industrial Swiss manufacturers of confectionery, long-life baking products and other food products. (saw/sda/awp)
