Going on holiday by car: How to beat traffic jams

class = “sc-cffd1e67-0 iQNQmc”>

Our roads will be clogged on the weekend.

There are days and weekends when traffic is heavy. Long weekends, public holidays or school holidays always fill the streets. Because many people are looking for sun and rest in the south. It’s time to travel again, and this is especially evident in front of Gotthard. Usual traffic congestion is likely to occur in many places. These places are particularly at risk.

  • Gotthard Tunnel goes south
  • San Bernardino Tunnel
  • Route between Chiasso-Centro and Chiasso-Brogeda border crossing
  • Motorway sections of the A1 Bern – Zurich motorway
  • A2 Basel – Lucerne

one

keep Calm

Drivers are likely to have strong tempers, especially on Thursday afternoons and Fridays. Take a deep breath and accept the situation. Avoid changing lanes and stay on the highway rather than trying to cross the country road.

2

Plan your trip well

If possible, the trip should not start on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. It is better to start the journey a day or two later or earlier. If you set out early in the morning or at night, you have a higher chance of avoiding traffic jams that last for hours. On long journeys, you should also take breaks in traffic jams. There should be no shortage of adequate supplies such as food and drink. Traffic congestion reports should be followed immediately (radio, internet, SRF traffic applications). Getting off the motorway to avoid traffic jams is rarely worth it – it often increases travel time significantly.

3

Avoid traffic jams

Crossings of the Swiss Alps offer ample opportunities to avoid traffic jams in the Gotthard Tunnel. The most common alternative is the A13 San Bernardino route. In particular, passengers from Basel, Zurich and eastern Switzerland travel faster via the A13 if they wait an hour in the Gotthard Tunnel.

Travelers from Western Switzerland and the Bern-Solothurn region can take the Simplon Pass or the Great St. Petersburg route, depending on their resort. He also has the option of traveling via Bernhard. In the latter, you can choose between the tunnel and the bypass, but the journey inside the tunnel is subject to a fee.

4

No track is faster

Whether you drive in the right, middle or left lane in traffic jams basically means the same thing. The subjective impression that things go faster on the left is often misleading. It is also free to pass other vehicles on the right in traffic jams or when traffic is stopped.

5

Take food and drinks with you

Especially if you are traveling with children, you should have enough food and drinks with you. Water and tea are suitable beverages.

6

Arm yourself against the heat

You don’t just need a robust air conditioning system to be prepared for high outdoor temperatures. Easy-to-install sunscreens such as films, curtains and blinds also belong to the vehicle. In sweaty weather, the roots of your hair get wet, the water cools your head and you sweat less.

7

Don’t forget the fun

If children are involved, the right variety can preserve family peace. Pack some games, puzzle books, (audio) books, and stuffed animals. You can also download movies and kid-friendly games to your tablet or smartphone (don’t forget your headphones!).
