The sandbox video game ‘Minecraft’ has been a huge hit since 2011 and is even considered the best-selling video game of all time. Millions of players spend hours immersed in the world of blocks to build the largest structures and landscapes. Previously you only played the character Steve (now you can choose others too). As you walk through the world with this, chopping things away, putting other things down. Now there’s a ‘Minecraft’ movie currently filming in New Zealand. Jack Black leads the illustrious cast that includes ‘Aquaman’ Jason Moma, comedian Kate McKinnon, Danielle Brooks of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ and ‘The White Lotus’ star Jennifer Coolidge. And he knocks that Steve out of the game.
He has prepared extensively for this, as he does now it turned out in an interview with a lot of irony. Jack Black, known as a passionate gamer from his own YouTube Let’s Plays, claims that that he currently plays “Minecraft” around the clock. When there is no filming, he turns on the game. After all, that is his duty: “An actor prepares.”
Jack Black’s “Minecraft” prep: learning to hack through gaming
“I want to be in full Minecraft mode. I want to know the rule and I want to do little things right – things like, ‘Oh, in the game this is how you use the pick, you hit things like this.’ I do the same in the film. I think the Academy members will appreciate my preparation later. I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m pretty sure I’m getting an Oscar for this movie.
Of course, Jack Black’s comments shouldn’t be taken entirely seriously, but the millions of “Minecraft” fans around the world should be happy that someone with a deep passion for the brand and the world of video games is involved with the film. ‘Minecraft’ is directed by Jared Hess, who already recorded ‘Nacho Libre’ with Black and is also known for ‘Napoleon Dynamite’, among others.
theatrical release of “Minecraft“ is April 3, 2025.
