An artificial intelligence model was able to predict 72 percent of Alzheimer’s diseases.

Artificial intelligence is finding a place in more and more fields. Technology is proving to be a particularly useful aid in healthcare.

PhD student Alice Tang researches Alzheimer’s disease at UC San Francisco in California. She wanted to investigate whether artificial intelligence could help detect diseases. To do this, it used an artificial intelligence model to analyze health data from five million people. Idea: Using machine learning, AI should be able to recognize patterns and therefore predict Alzheimer’s disease.

“The first step towards the application of artificial intelligence”

The results of the research are impressive. The model was able to detect the disease early in 72 percent of patients who later developed Alzheimer’s disease. In some cases, AI has been able to diagnose a disease seven years before the first symptoms.

Researcher Tang explains: “It is the combination of diseases that allows our model to predict the onset of Alzheimer’s. This is a first step towards not only detecting risks as early as possible, but also applying artificial intelligence to routine clinical data.” understand the biology behind it.”

It is the center of connection between diseases

AI was able to detect Alzheimer’s because several other diseases were associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. For example, men and women with high blood pressure and vitamin D deficiency are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

The model was able to determine which diseases were already present based on the health data people entered. Based on the link between previous diseases and Alzheimer’s, it could be calculated whether dementia was likely in the future. (obf)
