In the eight-part saga ‘The Dark Tower’, Stephen King masterfully combines fantasy with horror, science fiction with westerns. The multiverse story is extremely difficult to adapt, but Mike Flanagan now dares to try it in series form after a planned cinematic universe collapsed after just one film – namely Nikolaj Arcel’s “The Dark Tower”.
And Flanagan already has very clear ideas about how he wants to put the story about the last gunslinger, Roland Deschain, into practice. He wants to stay as close to the original as possible and that also means that a particularly heartbreaking scene must be included in the series faithfully to the original. To see this, the ‘Dark Tower’ series would actually have to run for multiple seasons as planned, as the scene takes place towards the end of the series. But then they say: Broken hearts are guaranteed!
shouted Mike Flanagan
Even Mike Flanagan was moved to tears when he read this scene. He even goes so far as to call it his favorite scene from the book cycle, and he can’t wait to incorporate it into his series. As part of the Emerald City Comic Con (via ), the creator of “The Haunting of Hill House” responded to the question about his favorite part, without spoilers:
“Very late in the story there is a scene that takes place in the woods where one of the characters is buried. And there is a eulogy that made me cry the first time I read it.” He cried so hard that his book showed traces of tears, Flanagan says.
You don’t know the King novels or you can’t remember the passage in question exactly and are now curious what it’s about? Then here’s the resolution with SPOILER warning.
Death in the last part of “The Dark Tower”
Mike Flanagan here refers to Roland’s eulogy for Jake Chambers in the (chronologically) final section “The Tower”. Jake sacrifices himself to save the writer Stephen King (!) – and is thus ultimately lost to Roland, to whom he was like a son, and his world. But there is one small consolation for readers: Jake still seems to exist in a different version of New York, only there he goes by the name Jake Toren.
Sounds not only sad, but also complicated? It is. As previously mentioned, the material isn’t necessarily easy to adapt – but many fans are hoping that Mike Flanagan, who is a huge Stephen King fan himself and has already adapted the King novels ‘The Game’ and ‘Doctor Sleep’, will you can. right on the template. In addition to “The Dark Tower,” Flanagan currently has another King project in the works: the short story adaptation “Chuck’s life“ starring Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill, which was recorded in late 2023 but does not yet have a release date.
