Two soft drinks a week makes a difference in heart health…

It has long been known that lemonade is not always the healthiest beverage option. In 2018, US researchers found that Coke and Sprite reduce the chances of getting pregnant.

Now another study by scientists at the Canadian University Laval in Quebec City sheds sweet drinks in a bad light. Researchers found that drinking just two 300ml cans a week could counteract the positive effects of exercise on heart health.

Two sodas a week: Significant health risks

Pharmacologists analyzed the health data of nearly 100,000 adults over the age of 30 and found that the damage caused by sugary drinks cannot be offset by an exercise quota of about 150 minutes per week. They urge consumers to avoid sugary sodas altogether.

“Physical activity halves, but does not completely eliminate, the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with sugary drinks,” explains scientist Jean-Philippe Drouin-Chartier, according to South West News Service.

Advertisements from soda giants like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are a pain in the ass for him. «Marketing strategies for these drinks generally indicate that active people drink these drinks. “They argue that if you are physically active, consuming sugary drinks has no negative impact on your health,” he criticizes.

Consuming two sodas per week is considered relatively low by many consumers; however, this can pose significant health risks.

Sweetened drinks are less dangerous

Lorena Pacheco, the study’s lead scientist, said: “Our findings provide further guidance for public health recommendations and guidelines to limit sugary drink consumption and encourage people to achieve and maintain appropriate levels of physical activity.”

Researchers said that according to their results, carbonated drinks containing sweeteners instead of sugar do not have the same negative effects. But Drouin-Chartier makes it clear: “The best beverage option is water.”

A study conducted in Spain in 2017 showed that people who replaced sugary soda or beer with a glass of water every day reduced their risk of becoming overweight by 20 percent.
