“The Logan Conspiracy” on Tele 5: that’s the story
Former CIA agent Ben Logan (Aaron Eckhart) retired to an inconspicuous private life some time ago. He has taken a normal office job at a tech company in Brussels and lives in a modest house with Amy (Liana Liberato), his teenage daughter. One day the girl accompanies him to his workplace and the two find all the rooms completely deserted, as if the company never existed.
Moments later, Ben and Amy are kidnapped by a man who initially poses as a colleague. With a bit of luck, father and daughter will manage to escape. When they are hunted by killers, Ben is certain that the situation must have something to do with his past with the US Secret Service. As they are hunted by assassins and CIA agent Anna Brandt (Olga Kurylenko) and her team, Ben has a lot of explaining to do to his shocked girl…
Jason Bourne greets you
The first English-language feature film by German director Philipp Stölzl (“Schachnovelle”) was released in the US as “Erased” and in most other countries as “The Expatriate”. “). The thriller was published only in German-speaking countries as “The Logan Conspiracy” – probably to suggest its proximity to the super-successful “The Bourne Conspiracy” and its sequels, which to some extent radically changed the action genre.
That may not have been a completely clean marketing idea, but it was certainly not completely absurd. Because even though there is no official connection between the films, parallels in content and structure cannot be denied. But those responsible probably had no real confidence in their scam. Because despite several prominent names in the cast such as that of “The Dark Knight” villain Aaron Eckhart, Bond girl (“Quantum of Solace”) and “Black Widow” opponent Olga Kurylenko as well as local star Alexander Fehling (“In the Labyrinth of Silence “), the thriller ultimately only celebrated its German premiere in home cinema.
According to our three-star FILMSTARTS review by author Robert Cherkowski, “The Logan Conspiracy” offers a solid thriller drama starring a good-humored Aaron Eckhart. The plot may seem a bit overloaded and a bit too complex. Some of the action scenes are performed with a pleasantly surprising consistency and seriousness. There is a lot of tension and the quality of the production is evident time and time again. To really keep up with the crème de la crème of the genre, the script really lacks original details and dramaturgical sophistication. Thriller fans can take another look tonight and won’t go wrong – they just shouldn’t expect a second “The Bourne Conspiracy” in terms of quality.
