Dr. Arthur Hammer is an FMH specialist in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery at the Jules-Gonin Eye Clinic in Lausanne. According to him, there are two reasons for dry eyes: Lack of tear secretion or evaporation of tear fluid, also called evaporative dryness. Both may occur simultaneously.
Not only is this uncomfortable because it itches and burns, it can also have consequences: “Dry eyes can lead to inflammation of the surface of the eye. Therefore, if eyelid massages or artificial tears do not work, treatment with anti-inflammatory eye drops may be important,” says Dr. Cekic.
It’s no coincidence that your eyes are drier in winter than in summer. Cold air contains less water vapor than warm air. “But fluctuations in air humidity are also multifactorial and vary within a season,” says Hammer. This means dry eyes are harder to predict. In addition, other factors that change depending on the seasons are situations that different people may react to differently.
These factors include pollen, which can cause inflammation on the surface of the eye, which can lead to dry eyes.
“Treatment for dry eye should be done gradually to avoid overmedication,” says Hammer. Treatment may depend on the type of dryness:
If there is dryness due to lack of tear secretion, the specialist recommends artificial tears, gel or vitamin A ointment. Only in the second step does Hammer recommend anti-inflammatory eye drops, tear secretion stimulators, or therapeutic scleral lenses.
In case of dryness caused by excessive evaporation of tear fluid, our specialist primarily recommends good eyelid hygiene, regular massage with warm compresses and cleansing with make-up remover wipes or cotton pads. Eye lubricants can be combined with these hygiene measures to reduce symptoms as much as possible.
Ideally, artificial tears do not contain any preservatives. They can be obtained from pharmacies without a prescription. However, if these products are not sufficient, if symptoms persist or dry mouth occurs, you can consult a specialist to evaluate the situation and determine the most appropriate treatment for you.
If you have severe pain, purulent discharge, or blurred vision that doesn’t improve when you blink, he recommends seeing a specialist ophthalmologist.
