The touching friendship between a young girl and a black jaguar in the Amazon rainforest in ‘Ella and the Black Jaguar’ struck a chord, especially in German cinemas. The family adventure of Gilles de Meester (“Mia and the White Lion”) is having its best weekend in its third week in local theaters and counts down out loud almost 150,000 new visitors, while the total number of tickets sold since the cinema’s release rose to more than 500,000. This means that the film, which also received a whopping 3.5 stars in our FILMARTS review, is becoming a real surprise hit and is even topping the German cinema charts this week.
Hot on its heels is Christopher Doll’s family adventure “A Million Minutes,” which landed on the silver stage with approximately 140,000 movie tickets purchased. The tragicomedy with Tom Schilling and Karoline Herfurth also has more than 500,000 viewers after its third week in cinemas. In third place is “Bob Marley: One lovea new start to the week that attracted no fewer than 125,000 people to the cinemas in this country. While the romantic comedy “Where the Lie Falls” posted similar numbers, Sony’s action hit “Madame Web” only reached number five on the box office charts during its opening weekend and had nearly 95,000 theater seats.
“Bob Marley: One Love” dominates in the US
In the US, the music biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” won the gold medal and grossed more than $51 million. This means that the film starring Kingsley Ben-Adir in the role of the music legend has comparable theatrical release numbers to other genre hits such as ‘Rocketman’ or ‘Elvis’. “Bob Marley: One Love” grossed approximately $80 million at the worldwide box office, meaning the biopic made back its more than $70 million budget after its first weekend. In contrast, “Madame Web” only managed $25.8 million in the U.S., making it the worst theatrical release among Sony’s superhero films, including “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Venom” and “Morbius.” action hit with Dakota Johnson, who is in ours FILMSTARTS review 2 stars, minimum around $50 million against an estimated budget of $80 million.
