Everyone knows: The busiest travel periods are not only school holidays but also the highest prices. Because the demand is high and parents cannot switch to other data.

In Switzerland, there are no school holidays in all cantons at the same time. In other words: weeks completely free of school holidays are a pretty rare thing.

These are the “kid-free” holiday weeks

The expert portal “Travelnews” examined when such weeks occur. These are as follows:

• 11-22 March
• 21 May – 15 June
• 2 – 21 September
• 3 November – 21 December

So these are ideal travel times. Especially since there were no school holidays in other European countries at that time.

In some cases, only a few cantons are free in the weeks before or after, so prices should be more affordable even then.

Then all the children have a holiday

Conversely, several weeks can also be noted when almost all of Switzerland had school holidays at the same time. This applies mainly to midsummer and autumn:

• 8 July – 9 August
• 28 September – 11 October

There are also public holidays valid in all cantons; namely Easter (March 29 – April 1), Ascension Day (May 9), Pentecost (May 20), national holiday (August 1), Christmas (May 25). 2024. December) and New Year (January 1, 2025).

Prices are generally high on these dates.

How big are the price differences?

If you don’t have children, it’s a good idea to travel outside of school holiday dates, preferably in the weeks mentioned above.

For example, Helvetic Tours charges 996 francs per person for a week’s stay at the Hotel Kimpton Aysla in Mallorca for two adults with a direct flight from Zurich from 13 May. The price of the same trip is 1,456 francs per person per week, starting from July 20. More than 46 percent difference!

Or, with Hotelplan, you can get three nights at Mitsis Rinela Beach Resort on the Greek island of Crete for 752 francs per person, with direct flights per week and all-inclusive, starting May 15. On July 24, the price for the same offer is 1,976 francs per person. The difference is a staggering 162 percent!

Good planning is everything

So if you don’t have kids and are still traveling during peak hours, it’s your fault. Conversely, for anyone with school-age children, the following applies: Use joke days or an absence request a few days before the start of the holiday to leave, or come home later if necessary. This could probably save you a few hundred francs.
