‘The Walking Dead’ came to an end in 2022 after no fewer than eleven seasons. But we can still expect to see plenty of supplies from the zombie universe in the near future – and possibly on an even larger scale than previously thought. Most recently, the franchise was expanded with the spin-offs “The Walking Dead: Dead City” and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” starring Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) respectively. are experiencing their own new adventures and both of which already have the green light for a second season.
And in a few weeks, “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live,” fans’ most anticipated spinoff, will launch as it will mark the comeback of former series figurehead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his great love Michonne (Danai Gurira). The project, which was originally planned as a film trilogy but was eventually turned into a six-part miniseries, is actually intended to tell a complete story about what Rick went through at the mighty Civic Republic after his alleged death in the ninth ‘Walking Dead’ – season and how he gets back together with Michonne.
But the story may not be complete after all and could also lead to a major crossover…
Will “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” get a second season?
When asked about the sequel potential of “The Ones Who Live,” “Walking Dead” franchise boss Scott M. Gimple explained in an interview with : “Anything is possible. Even if Rick dies in the last episode, anything is possible.” For Gimple, there seem to be no limits when it comes to the story and expansion of the ‘Walking Dead’ universe.
And in fact, it wouldn’t be the first production in the series landscape to be continued after its inception as a standalone miniseries (see, for example, “Big Little Lies” or “Good Omens”). However, it remains to be seen if this will actually happen and if we will see more of Rick and Michonne in the ‘Walking Dead’ world. In fact, Gimple already has other ambitious plans that could give us just that, even without a second season of “The Ones Who Live”…
Spinoff crossover could be a sort of twelfth ‘Walking Dead’ season
Opposite the website Gimple revealed that he dreams of one day bringing all of The Walking Dead’s largely independent spinoffs back together in a major crossover event; Greetings from Disney’s MCU. The divergent paths of fan favorites like Negan, Maggie, Daryl, Rick and Michonne or Morgan (Lennie James), who migrated to the spin-off ‘Fear The Walking Dead’, could one day cross again.
If this actually happens, fans will still get something like a late twelfth season of “Walking Dead.”in which most of the popular main characters of the time would meet again.
But even though Gimple, according to his own statement, appeared in the series “Walking Dead” has already offered some hints of such a meetingSo far, these are all just rough plans and wishes, and it’s unclear whether they will actually come to fruition: “You never know exactly when and how everything will come together, for various reasons,” says Gimple. “All I’m saying is I’m building these trails. But there can be all kinds of deviations along the way that change everything.”
In any case, you shouldn’t expect such a mega-crossover too soon. First of all, the mentioned one is there – and in Germany parallel to the American launch: “The Walking Dead: Those Who Livestarts in this country on February 26, 2024 on the Telekom streaming service Magenta TV.
