Finnmark, in northeastern Norway, is the size of Switzerland, with only 76,000 inhabitants; Ideal for an uncrowded minibus journey.

Finnmark, Norway

Holidays are booming in Scandinavia. Besides the breathtaking view, security and high quality of life, this is mainly due to two points. Firstly, more and more travelers are “escaping” crowded Mediterranean destinations during the summer months, and secondly, unfortunately, climate change also plays a part in this. The temperate climate, with increasing hot periods in Central and Southern Europe, draws people north. But: Despite the boom, Scandinavia is still wonderfully empty.

My favorite region is Finnmark, at the northeastern tip of Norway. Although the region is as large as Switzerland, it is home to only 74,000 people (though there are around 185,000 adorable reindeer roaming the area). This far north, around the 70th parallel, only grasses and lichens survive on the seemingly endless plains. This expanse is great for walking and letting your soul breathe.

If you need human contact again after a few days in nature, you will find cities such as Hammerfest, Alta or Kerkenes. My favorite is the small inland settlement of Karasjok, which is very influenced by Sámi tradition. And of course, you can’t miss a trip to the Northern Cape, almost the northernmost point of the European mainland, at latitude 71 north.

Fly: The best thing to do is to rent a camping van and go on a road trip (for example in Tromsø). Because thanks to everyone’s right, you can camp wildly here (as long as you don’t disturb anyone).

Steigerwald, Germany

Germany is one of the most popular short trip destinations for Mr. and Mrs. Schweizer. In addition to cities such as Berlin and Hamburg, Swiss people also travel especially to Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, just across the border. But the “larger canton” has many more “hidden gems”, such as the Steigerwald region in northwestern Bavaria. The region stretches from the River Main in the west to the city of Bamberg in the northeast and almost to the metropolis of Nuremberg. Steigerwald is an excellent travel destination, especially for experts and active travelers. Foodies can visit local breweries and wander from winery to winery through the villages along the Main River and treat themselves to a glass of “Schoppen”, a Franconian wine. Predominantly white vines such as Silvaner or Müller-Thurgau are grown. The village of Wiesenbronn, known for its red wines, is an exception.

If you’re looking to cut down on your wine and snack calories, you’ll find plenty of walking and cycling routes through the gently rolling countryside, dotted with charming medieval villages like Iphofen or Prichsenstadt. The most beautiful city in the region is Bamberg, awarded by UNESCO for its historic old town and numerous breweries. Be sure to try the smoked beer at the Schlenkerla brewery!

FlyThe town of Wiesenbronn is ideal as a base camp, where you can stay in the family-run red wine hotel and sample fine wines at the neighboring winery.

Galicia, Spain

Galicia is probably one of the most internationally unknown regions of Spain, despite literally hundreds of thousands of people making pilgrimages to the northwest of the country every year. The end point of the Way of St. James is in the city of Santiago de Compostela. But Galicia has much to offer beyond pilgrimage and self-discovery; Galicia is an El Dorado, especially for food lovers. The focus is on seafood “mariscos”: razor clams, various types of crabs, spider crabs, mussels, lobsters, mussels and oysters grown off the coast. You can have a wonderful feast (rarely have I eaten so creatively) both at the simple port restaurant and at chef Pepe Vieiras’ two-star restaurant near the city of Pontevedra.

Surprisingly, wine is also produced in Galicia: white wine Albariño thrives on the coast, while delicious red wines thrive inland at Ribeira Sacra. The Ribeira Sacra wine-growing region on the Sil River is reminiscent of the Douro in Portugal with its steep terraces. It’s a great view, especially in autumn!

Fly: Galicia also offers beautiful beaches; excellent alternatives to the sometimes crowded Mediterranean.

Newfoundland, Canada

A storm blew me to Newfoundland. I was sailing off the east coast of America and Canada when we had to turn north due to a tropical storm. We landed in the small town of Corner Brook, which looked more pragmatic than picturesque. Still, I loved this place right away. Especially because there is an incredibly important history to be had at this spot: Young Englishman James Cook mapped the coast here in the 18th century. He did this so well that he was commissioned by the British crown to sail to the South Seas, where he “discovered” Australia. But Newfoundland may be much more exciting from a historical perspective: in the far north of the island, at L’Anse aux Meadows, there are ruins of 1,000-year-old Viking settlements, the first European visitors to the New World. The highlight of Newfoundland is nature, which you can explore on long walks.

Fly: The best time to visit is April 8, 2024 at 19:45. Afterwards, you can experience a total solar eclipse in Terra Nova National Park.

5

Fez, Morocco

Morocco is the most enjoyable travel destination in North Africa: the travel infrastructure is great, the political situation is safe and above all, as a traveler you are not constantly harassed by souvenir sellers. Although it is a little too crowded for my taste, the place that attracts the most tourists is the beautiful city of Marrakech. I discovered the city of Fez on my last visit and I’m still raving about it. The old royal city is the original Marrakech, as the medieval old town has not yet adapted to the needs of tourists (except for a few souvenir shops).

If you stay in a historic house in the old town (ideally on an Airbnb), you can experience authentic Moroccan daily life. Sights include various historical Qur’anic schools and, above all, the leather tanneries located in the middle of the old city. A visit is a must – but the scent is not for the faint of heart.

Fly: The most beautiful cafe and tea house is Harabe Bahçe, where you can both visit and have a delicious meal.
