It’s Wednesday – and that means: new international weekly charts are on Netflix! And at first glance they don’t (just) reveal great insights: The action comedy “Lift” tops the top 10 English-language films, while the South Korean dystopia hit “Badland Hunters” leads the rankings among non-English films (just ahead of the German martial arts thriller “60 Minutes”). And when it comes to series, as expected, you cannot ignore the crime drama ‘Griselda’ with Sofia Vergara.
But In the background, a Netflix original became one of the streaming giant’s biggest hits: “Leaving the world behind“. The apocalyptic thriller from “Mr. Robot’ mastermind Sam Esmail launched exclusively on the platform on December 8, 2023 – and eight weeks later he’s barely playing a part anymore Charts on Netflix. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that the film is still streaming – and continuing to rack up views. And that still has an impact right now -Netflix ranking, after all, the viewing figures of the first 91 days are used. And the apocalyptic film with Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali has not succeeded by a long shot.
After 52 days, ‘Leave The World Behind’ is now in the top 10 most-watched English-language films on Netflix with 136.3 million views – leaving behind the action hit ‘Extraction’ with the star-studded crime thriller ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ from Chris Hemsworth and Rian Johnson. And that probably won’t be the end of the story, since positions five to eight are very close together:
To overtake Jennifer Lopez starrer ‘The Mother’, you just need 100,000 views. And also the family-friendly hero adventure “We Can Be Heroes” by Robert Rodriguez (137.3 million views) and the spy actor “The Gray Man” (139.3 million views) are definitely within reach – especially since “Leave The World Behind” Er are still Still almost 40 days to climb one place or another in the rankings.
However, the top positions seem out of reach for Esmail’s oppressive vision of the future. The undisputed number 1 is still ‘Red Notice’ with Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot – with no less than 230.9 million views.

In the FILMSTARTS review, which placed particular emphasis on “Julia Roberts’ creative camerawork and captivating performance”, the film received “only” 3 out of 5 stars. For the author of this article, however, the thoroughly tangible, apocalyptic horror scenario is one of the best Netflix originals in recent memory.
