This is the number of dual citizens in Switzerland

The Federal Statistical Office published the annual structure survey this week. This is the largest study of population and family structure in Switzerland. These are the most important findings.

The new structural survey of the Federal Statistical Office covers topics related to the economy, politics and science in Switzerland. This year the emphasis was mainly on the topics of religion, dual nationality, commuting and the Swiss labor market. We have summarized the most important graphs for you:

About 20 percent of the Swiss population (1.095 million people) had dual nationality in 2022. Of these, approximately 65 percent acquired a Swiss passport through naturalization and 35 percent received Swiss citizenship at birth.

The research shows that the ten most represented groups most often obtained Swiss citizenship through naturalization. In particular, people from Kosovo (94 percent), Serbia (90 percent) and North Macedonia (90 percent) were successfully naturalized. Swiss-French dual nationality is the only group more likely to have acquired Swiss citizenship at birth (57 percent) than through naturalization (43 percent).

The proportion of dual citizens varies depending on the canton.
It is highest in Geneva at 48 percent. The canton of Obwalden has the lowest number of dual citizens at just five percent.

The annual structural survey also shows that commuting to and from work is not unusual in this country. In Switzerland, eight in ten working people would be commuters in 2022. That’s about 3.6 million people. And: Nowadays there are much larger commuter flows than a few decades ago.

In 2022, approximately 50 percent used the car as their main mode of transportation, 29 percent used public transport and 18 percent walked or cycled to work.

Another aspect of the BFS structural survey is the labor market in Switzerland. The canton of Zurich has the most employees with 54 percent. Obwalden and Appenzell Innerrhoden have a particularly high percentage of students and self-employed people. The highest number of unemployed is in the canton of Geneva (6 percent). The canton of Ticino is particularly notable for its large number of unemployed people (45 percent).

In 2022, 4.5 million people between the ages of 15 and 64 were employed in Switzerland. That is 7.8 percent more than in 2012. More than a third worked part-time.

Most full-time workers work in Zug (72 percent), Nidwalden (71 percent), Schwyz (71 percent) and Ticino (71 percent). However, part-time work is especially popular in the canton of Bern (36 percent), the canton of Jura (36 percent) and the canton of Basel-Stadt (35 percent).

The focus of the structural research in the field of ‘religion’ this year was on people without religious beliefs, who for the first time form the largest religious group. As the topic of ‘religions’ was covered in more detail by the BFS, we published our own story about it. You can find more information about this here. 👇
