It produces some of the seminal fluid that carries sperm and is usually the size of a chestnut. We are talking about the prostate, the male sexual organ located under the bladder. Regardless of reproductive functions, the prostate can often cause discomfort.
“Almost every man suffers from prostate-related problems at some point in his life,” says Thomas Hermanns (50), a urologist at the Hirslanden Clinics Urology Center in Zurich. A recent example is King Henry III. Charles (75). His enlarged prostate needs to be treated with surgery in the hospital. Hermanns explains what this disease is all about.

According to Hermanns, one in every two men is affected by prostate enlargement. The genital organ usually begins to grow from the age of 40 or 45. Why this happens has not yet been clarified in medicine. An enlarged prostate can narrow part of the urethra. “Some men have to go to the toilet several times a night,” says the expert. Others have a weakened urine flow or no sensation of complete emptying of the bladder. Inflammation could be another consequence of prostate enlargement, says the expert. Especially if the bladder no longer empties completely when urinating.

An enlarged prostate in itself is not dangerous, says Hermanns. “It can usually be treated well with medication.” Surgery is usually only necessary if drug therapy is not successful or if the man can no longer urinate and urine accumulates in the bladder.

In addition to prostate enlargement, prostate cancer is the most common disease of the sexual organ. It is considered the most common type of cancer in men. According to the Cancer Society, there are more than 7,100 new cases each year. “Most men are over 50 at the time of the disease,” says Hermanns. Because prostate cancer usually does not cause any symptoms in its early stages, the disease is often discovered late in life, without preventive measures, when metastasis has occurred. Family history increases risk.
4
“If you have prostate cancer in your immediate family, you should have regular preventive examinations starting at age 45,” says Hermanns. The frequency of check-ups is then discussed with the doctor. If there is no genetic predisposition, a check-up is recommended starting from the age of 50. “There is no miraculous treatment you can apply to protect the prostate,” says the specialist. As is often the case with diseases, an active, healthy lifestyle helps.

Since the risk of prostate cancer is very low in young men under the age of 50 with no family history, preventive prostate examination is not recommended. Hermann: “Check-up can also cause young men unnecessary discomfort and stress, but it is important that they know the risks.” It is important that men do not hesitate to go to the doctor if they experience any symptoms.
