Vegetarianism is a diet in which predominantly plant-based foods are consumed. Foods obtained from dead animals, such as meat, fish, seafood, and all products derived from them are rejected.

Approximately 50 kilograms of meat are eaten per person per year in Switzerland. Numbers are decreasing, particularly due to increased awareness of environmental and animal welfare issues. The vegetarian trend is growing rapidly, and in addition to a wider range of meat alternatives, there are also a growing number of restaurants specializing in meat-free diets. Various places in Zurich

The place you’ve talked about the most so far is Hiltl in the heart of the city of Zurich. The world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant has been nominated as the best vegetarian restaurant in Switzerland more than 40 times. “Everything is fine here,” enthuses Blick reader Zoltan Kelemen. «The selection is huge, the service is friendly and the desserts are unbeatable. “I was even there with two open-minded meat fans and they were both very excited.”

Zurich, Basel, St. Locations in Gallen, Bern, Lausanne, Lucerne, Winterthur

Tibits ranks second with its locations in various cities in Switzerland. Founded by the Frei family together with the Hiltl family 20 years ago, the vegetarian restaurant impresses the Blick community with its variety of vegetarian and vegan food options and cozy atmosphere. Blick reader Tamara Müller says: “I think it’s nice that I can eat in all the big cities and everything tastes good!” he writes.

Lucerne, St. Karliquai 7

Karls Kraut is a vegan restaurant in the city of Lucerne. “Cooking here is very seasonal,” writes reader Lukas Bürer. Reader Sandra Reichling especially loves the ambience and the fact that there are always new dishes.

Zurich, Feldstrasse 98

The market kitchen in Zurich District 4 serves only meat-free dishes. The restaurant is very popular among the Blick community. “Chef Tobias Hoesli is truly an artist,” raves reader René Truninger. “He uses good, local produce to interpret a unique vegetarian cuisine.”

Liestal, Rathausstrasse 66

Blick reader Hans’s favorite vegetarian restaurant, Herzlich, is located in Liestal BL. “The food tastes great, it’s local and the staff is very friendly.”

Zurich, Langstrasse 231

Samses on Langstrasse in Zurich’s 5th District offers vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Blick reader Michaela Meier writes: “As a true meat eater, Samses convinced me that it can be delicious without meat! The buffet is clean, fresh and never boring.”

Bern, Laupenstrasse 4

Vegan fast food chain Swing Kitchen offers a variety of vegan burgers and nuggets in Bern. Sustainability and regionalism are important here. This fast food restaurant uses no plastic. Swing Kitchen is also available in Basel (Steinenvorstadt 19).
