“Jessabelle” on Tele 5: that is the story
Things haven’t been easy for young Jessie (Snook) since losing her fiancé (Hallisay) and her unborn child in a serious car accident. To somehow help the young woman, who is now paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair, cope with the situation, her father (Andrews) brings her back to the family home in Louisiana. However, Jessie soon gets the impression that something is wrong in the somewhat outdated house.
One day, while rummaging through old boxes, she finds an old videocassette. It contains a disturbing message that her mother Kate (Carter), who died years ago, once recorded for her. Kate had read tarot cards and predicted a future full of horror. In the form of an apparently supernatural presence that soon increasingly manifests itself in the old building, this dark prophecy now seems to actually be coming true…
You better turn on the lights!
The three main people behind the 2014 film were all having a really good time in Hollywood recently. Lead actress Sarah Snook was awarded an Emmy and a Golden Globe for best drama actress in quick succession for her stunning performance in the hit series ‘Succession’. Now that awards season is really picking up steam, she should definitely be able to pick up a few more awards.
Producer Jason Blum, as the most globally successful horror maker in years, should be in a consistently good mood anyway. In 2023, the man behind megahits such as the series ‘Paranormal Activity’, ‘Insidious’ and ‘The Purge’, but also ‘Get Out’ and ‘The Black Phone’ again brought several successful titles to the cinemas – ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s are “The Exorcist: Confession” and “Insidious: The Red Door” are just the most prominent examples of this.
Director Kevin Greutert finally managed to get the torture horror franchise back on track with ‘Saw And not only in terms of box office turnover, but especially in terms of quality.
Because the filmmaker, who appears so friendly and pleasantly modest in interviews, was already heavily involved in violence with his previous works such as ‘Saw VI+VII’ and as editor-in-chief of ‘The Strangers’, among others, it was a bit surprising that he, of all people, took a seat in the director’s chair for “Jessabelle”, the horror is much more subtle and much less gory in this one. In the opinion of the author of these lines, Greutert did an excellent job of specifically relying on a really scary gothic horror atmosphere. So maybe you should leave the light on in the room while you watch the movie. Otherwise the night could be difficult for one or the other…
