“Get out of the pond“ tops the charts for the first time in its third week in German cinemas. The animation adventure of the ‘Minions’ creators is increasing impressively from week to week. After starting in third place with 146,000 tickets sold and jumping to second place (296,000 tickets), it now sits at the top with around 305,000 moviegoers.
Behind it, two other stable titles, “Wonka” (255,000) and “Aquaman 2: Lost Kingdom” (220,000), took second and third place on the box office charts. While “Out of the Pond” also exceeds the all-important million visitor mark with the weekend’s numbers, “Aquaman 2” just manages to surpass this with a total of 995,000 tickets purchased for the DC adventure.
Success story “Wonka”: now number 6 in the 2023 annual lists
‘Wonka’ has long since surpassed it and with a total of almost 1.9 million visitors has even overtaken titles such as ‘Fast & Furious 10’ or ‘John Wick 4’ in the list of the most successful cinema charts in 2023. “Wonka” is now in an impressive sixth place in the annual lists – and that’s not the end of the story.
Also ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’ in 5th place and ‘Elemental’ in 4th place, which each had around two million visitors, are likely to be overtaken soon. It can be assumed that “Wonka” will be the fourth most successful film release in German cinemas in 2023.
Only then will a huge gap open that cannot be closed. “Oppenheimer” in third place already has more than four million visitors. The most successful film in 2023 is ‘Barbie’ with almost six million cinema tickets sold, ahead of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Film’ (5.3 million).
“Wish” remains strong and a record start for “The Boy and the Heron”
On the other hand, there are two other animated films at positions 4 and 5 on the weekend chart. Disney’s “Wish” is developing into a highly successful long-running hit after a slightly less than expected start. During the sixth weekend of the edition, approximately 175,000 people went to the cinema to see the new work of the Maushaus. With a total of 1.6 million visits, ‘Wish’ has risen to the list of the ten most successful cinema releases in 2023.
The top 5 ends with the best reboot of the week: another animated film. Anime legend Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” drew about 140,000 people to cinemas during its first official weekend. The previews, which have been taking place since Christmas, also attracted around 75,000 cinema fans.
It is a double record for the director legend and his legendary Studio Ghibli: It is the best cinema release in Germany from the career of the now 83-year-old exceptional director, who was actually retired but has since returned. It’s also the best start to a Studio Ghibli production.
