Damp, wet and mouldy: Large family faces financial ruin after building house

The Baar family of 12, who want to build their own house, are currently struggling with existential difficulties.

It was a perfect plan: Martin Baar (60) wanted to build his own house for himself and his family. He and his wife have ten children aged between 11 and 33. Four of them have intellectual disabilities; They were supposed to live for a long time in a communal apartment in the new house. The three oldest children no longer live with their parents. The rest of the family would stay on the ground floor with the annexe.

Everything was also settled financially: the eldest daughter and her family were to rent their parents’ house in Karlsfeld. There will also be loans and grants. “Then I could afford the loan installments of 2,800 euros a month,” explains family man Martin Baar in an interview with RTL. But then the sole winner was blocked.

The house would have to be demolished before it could be built properly

The Baar family was supposed to move into their new prefabricated house by December 2023 at the latest. But as soon as construction started in April 2023, problems arose: the basement had been constructed incorrectly. According to the customer, the distances in the shell did not match the neighboring wall: they were too close to the wall to the joint tapes, which are very important for the tightness of the basement floor. That’s why the basement was shifted ten centimeters.

Because the house still didn’t fit, the shell was shifted another ten centimeters. The house was then placed above the basement. As a result, the triangular wall was suddenly left floating on metal plates. According to Baar, the building was moved for the second time. Despite all efforts, the conditions in the unfinished basement were unacceptable: damp, smelling musty, and the water was centimeters high.

“I will not buy a house where the cap does not fit, or in our case, the basement of the house, and the basement leaks,” the father of the family told RTL. Therefore, he appointed an expert to make the evaluation. Then the shock: The house needs to be demolished. But this will mean more costs and financial ruin for the family.

The future of the family is uncertain

“We have already paid around 530,000 euros in total. But we cannot endure years of legal disputes,” says Baar. “I’ll be financially ruined if I let it all continue.”

Martin Baar has been trying to find a solution with construction companies for six months to get out of this situation. However, the company has not yet acknowledged any possible error. To date, the 60-year-old man is hoping in vain to find concrete solutions.

The Baar family is currently dependent on support and donations to make ends meet. For this, they started a fundraising campaign on the Gofundme platform. The family has now been able to raise over 60,000 euros. However, it is not yet known what will happen in the new year. (gs)
