Some edibles tolerate room temperature well, but others are at increased risk of bacteria after spending a night outside the refrigerator. For this reason, you should avoid eating some foods after keeping them in the refrigerator for a certain period of time.

Yogurt and any type of fresh milk should be placed in the refrigerator, especially if it has been opened. This also applies to UHT dairy products: after opening, they must be stored in the refrigerator.

However, sometimes you leave your food in the kitchen or forget the opened yoghurt on the table. In such a situation, you should trust your senses. Smell and taste test dairy products. Basically, if milk or yogurt has been stored at room temperature overnight, it is better to stay away from them.

Mayonnaise does not need to be refrigerated if it is unopened. After opening, it is placed in the refrigerator. Industrially produced mayonnaise can withstand being left at room temperature for several hours, even when opened. If in doubt, it’s best to smell it. However, homemade mayonnaise should never be stored in the refrigerator. Since it does not contain preservatives, it is not edible after a short time.

When preparing pasta, you often find that you overcook it. You can store cooked pasta in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. At room temperature, things look a little different. Pasta with sauce is particularly susceptible to bacteria if left unrefrigerated. You should not leave pasta out of the refrigerator for more than twelve hours. During this time, heat the pasta at at least 70 degrees Celsius for two minutes.

Rice is also often left over from cooking. It’s best to store leftovers in the refrigerator rather than in a pot on the stove. Rice can be eaten in the refrigerator for up to two days after cooking. However, if you leave the food at room temperature, you should eat it within twelve hours. Bacteria spreads quickly in unrefrigerated rice. So smell the food and warm it thoroughly before eating.

Meat, fish and seafood

Foods containing meat, fish and seafood are particularly susceptible to bacteria. After preparing fish and seafood, you should cool them for at least an hour. Meat can last up to an hour longer at room temperature. After that, consumption may become critical.
