The 9 rudest things you can do as a host or hostess

Only offering alcohol? Send guests away too early? What are the real no-go’s as a host?

A good host and hostess wants everyone present to feel comfortable. To achieve this, the food, drinks, hygiene of the premises (more about this in this article) and the atmosphere must be good. But the latter is sometimes not so easy. Usually this is because hosts ignore one or more of these nine points:

If the invited people don’t know each other yet, they should be introduced. This makes it easier for those present to talk to each other. Especially for shy people or guests who don’t know anyone else, it is important and useful to introduce yourself so that the atmosphere at the party is good.

For example, when introducing yourself, it can be helpful to mention common interests such as hobbies, travel, food preferences, or occupation – as an icebreaker, so to speak.

If you want to start on time or don’t want a party that lasts until the next morning, communicate this clearly to the guests. Information about a possible or desired dress code must also be stated on the invitation.

If the guests need to bring anything else, for example drinks, food, games or even slippers – more about this in one of the next points – the hosts should also indicate this on the invitation.

Your guests arrive, but the drinks are still warm, the decorations are still in the drawer and the toilet is still dirty? There are certainly one or two more things that can be done while the guests are busy with themselves. However, those present feel more welcome if the host has already done most of the work and can also enjoy their party.

Take off shoes or leave them on? Everyone has different preferences when it comes to demand. Some people don’t mind guests walking around the apartment in street shoes. Others, on the other hand, find it annoying when guests trample dirt from the street onto their carpet.

Hosts must communicate their preference in a timely manner. This means that guests can prepare for this and wear different socks (without holes or in matching colors) or bring slippers if necessary. In this context, it is also good if the host has slippers ready for his visitors.

If you let attendees keep their street shoes on, you can – if possible – move carpets aside so they don’t get dirty.

If you invite a lot of people and neglect to keep replenishing the buffet and drinks, you quickly lose the overview. It can be rude if the host does not talk to all the guests, but only deals with the same people, for example.

A good host should have at least one short conversation with everyone present. Also when it comes to guiding an invited person.

Dogs, cats, etc. are not for everyone. Some have allergies, others have deep fears. If pets are present, please inform in advance.

If there are pets in the household where the party is taking place, these should also be prepared in a timely manner. For example, provide places where you can retreat where guests are not allowed or cannot enter. If dogs can’t handle the crowds, they can be given to a dog sitter or friends for the duration.

Alcohol has a disinhibitory effect on many people. This can then ensure that the atmosphere during the celebration is more relaxed, relaxed and cheerful. However, if those present consume too much alcohol, the situation can quickly change. When alcohol levels are too high, some people become aggressive, lethargic and depressed, talkative, clingy or simply tired. Good hosts ensure that both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available. They also ensure that the guests do not get drunk and sometimes drink water or lemonade.

If visitors have a food allergy, there should be food on the table that they can eat. Because no one wants hungry guests – or even people who have an allergic reaction after eating.

Being a host is often tiring: the preparation, the support and ultimately the clean-up. Regardless of whether the duration of the party stated on the invitation (see point above) has been exceeded or the host is exhausted and wants to go to bed, Wait until all visitors have left before cleaning up.

Tip: You can of course store one or two items in advance that are no longer needed or are dirty and therefore take up unnecessary space or disrupt the atmosphere.
