Outside delivery hours: Heavy fines for incorrect disposal of wine bottles

The clattering sound of empty wine bottles making their way to the waste glass container is a part of daily life for many wine lovers. But what some people don’t know is that in Switzerland there are fixed disposal times for glass to be disposed of at recycling collection points, which vary from community to community.

For example, in the city of Zurich, empty glass bottles can be thrown away from Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 8 pm. Disposal of used glass is not allowed outside these delivery hours, on public holidays and Sundays. So what happens if you don’t follow these rules?

Police give fines

At Blick’s request, the media office of the Zurich City Police confirmed that failure to comply with the above-mentioned entry times could result in a fine of 50 francs. However, only four such buses were distributed in the city of Zurich last year. The Zurich example shows that the majority of the population sticks to the throw-in time.

The main purpose of limiting drop-off times is to minimize noise pollution in surrounding neighborhoods, which includes travel by car. In case of littering, for example, if an empty cigarette pack is placed next to the waste glass container, the fine increases to 120 francs. Larger items, such as an old office chair, are subject to even higher fines as this would be illegal waste disposal.
