Back to roots: Make-up bar opens its own cosmetics school

When Bea Petri (68) opened her first make-up bar in Zurich 20 years ago, not many believed in her success. However, with its unusual concept for the time, a mixture of cosmetics studio and cafe, make-up artist and make-up artist to stars, it struck a nerve at the time. The idea came to him while he was in the US for a few months to shoot a movie. “On a day off, she got a manicure at the nail salon. Besides beautiful nails, there were massages and coffee,” says daughter Kim Petri, 42, who took over the make-up bar seven years ago with her husband Marc Rotter, 46, and sister Lia Petri (44). “It’s a quick and good way to recover without having to take off your clothes.” He was fascinated by the concept of the path.”

The makeup bar currently has seven locations in Switzerland, employing over 100 people. Including 12 students. “Since the opening of the first branch, we have also been offering training and advanced training; this is part of the DNA of the makeup bar,” says Kim Petri, creative director and owner of the makeup bar. And not just in Switzerland. “When my mother first went to Burkina Faso in 2008 to educate young women, she was appalled by the poverty and living conditions.” He later devoted himself to providing education to the country’s poorest people. Bea Petri founded the Nas Mode school in the landlocked West African country, which trains men and women in the professions of hairdressers, beauticians and tailors. Today it hosts 300 students every year.

We are ready for the professional world after seven months

They now want to transfer their many years of knowledge to Switzerland. Schminkbar opens its own cosmetology school called “Schminkbar Talents”. “We target people who are no longer up to date, people returning to work, people making career changes, and people who haven’t found their dream job yet,” says Kim Petri. The training lasts seven months (including a three-month internship) and starts in early February 2024.

“In the first two months, our trainees learn various massage techniques, epilation, eyelash lifting, and an intensive one-week make-up course is included in the program,” says Kim Petri. “In the third month, we devoted ourselves to manicures and pedicures.” Then everything is repeated to prepare the students for the exam. And after theory comes practice. “Our graduates can apply what they have learned to their customers by doing a three-month paid internship at one of our Schminkbar branches.”

A permanent position awaits you after training

There is no shortage of cosmetology schools in Switzerland. What makes a makeup stick so special? “We don’t just train people, we also offer a tracking solution,” says Kim Petri. «After seven months you are really ready for the professional world. And if everything goes well, you can get a permanent position with us.” Classes are also smaller than in regular schools. “We want to take care of everyone individually, this is very important to us,” says Kim Petri.
