Three large female statues in the “Iberia” exhibition at the Antikenmuseum Basel.

From a silver treasury to elaborately decorated objects, beautifully painted vases and fascinating small bronze figurines and impressive monumental female statues: the 260 objects in the “Iberia” exhibition indicate a high culture in the Iron Age (last millennium BC). Ancient Iberia stretched in a wide strip from present-day Apulia along the east coast of Spain to the French Languedoc in the north.

Thanks to the collaboration between the Basel Museum and the Museu d’Arquelogia in Barcelona, you can now get to know this culture for the first time in Switzerland. At least that’s what we know about the culture or can read from objects, exhibition curator Laurent Gorgerat said during a media tour on Friday.

Because many things still remain behind a mysterious fog. The Iberians had a script whose letters could be transcribed. However, this has not been of much use so far because the Iberian language cannot (yet) be translated.

Also according to accounts from Greek and Roman sources – Iberia was founded by the Romans after the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage around 210 BC. This region, which was integrated into the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC, should be approached with caution. Arrogant ancient civilizations referred to the Iberians disparagingly as savages from the western edge of the world.

The exhibition now leaves ample space for objects that prove the opposite of primitive marginal existence and emphasizes the use of objects in a way that brings Iberian culture closer. There is also a 124-page publication included in the admission fee.

The exhibition will last until May 26, 2024.
