Meat, fish, eggs and nuts. These foods contain, among other things, pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5. Now scientists have discovered that this vitamin also promotes the growth of cancer.

Breast cancer cells in particular appear to be dependent on the vitamin for their growth, as shown by a study recently published in the specialist journal “Natur Metabolism”. If a smaller amount is absorbed, tumor growth slows down.

In their study, the team examined Myc, one of the most important cancer-causing genes. This was implanted into mice. Researchers found that vitamin B5 also accumulates in areas where there is a lot of Myc. Myc makes tumor cells dependent on certain nutrients, such as vitamin B5.

Giving up B5 is not an idea

When the Myc-rich mice were then fed a vitamin B5-restricted diet, the scientists found that the tumors grew more slowly than in mice fed the normal diet. The growth of human breast cancer tissue transplanted into mice was also dramatically reduced. The researchers’ conclusion: Anyone with a tumor who consumes too much vitamin B5 can greatly stimulate the growth of cancer.

But simply doing without vitamin B5 is not an option. The body also needs vitamins for the tumor-fighting immune system. Therefore, researchers now want to develop new strategies specifically to combat tumors. However, if possible, the immune system should not be impaired.

Some vitamins reduce the risk

The nutritional requirement of vitamin B5 can also be used for other purposes. In the future, doctors may be able to test patients to see whether they will respond positively to a specific treatment against the Myc gene. Possible treatments could be tested and adapted much more quickly for each patient, leading to faster recovery, according to scientists.

The risk of cancer can also be significantly reduced with some vitamins. Anyone who takes vitamin D regularly has a lower risk of dying from a tumor. An evaluation of 14 highest-quality studies on the link between vitamin D3 supplementation and cancer prognosis showed that taking vitamin D3 supplements can reduce the risk of dying from cancer by twelve percent. There is only one condition: Vitamin D3 should be taken daily.
