Worth 600,000 Euros: French police are chasing champagne thieves on the highway

It sounds like something out of an action movie script: According to British newspaper The Guardian, two truck trailers carrying high-quality Moët & Chandon champagne recently disappeared near Reims, France. The thieves escaped by putting the valuable cargo into two different trucks.

It’s a lucrative loot, as the total value of the stolen champagne bottles is said to reach €600,000. But the thieves did not expect the stolen trailers to be equipped with a tracking system. This enabled the French police to start tracking in a very short time.

After a crazy chase on a French highway, trucks first tried to push police vehicles. When that didn’t work, the driver jumped out of one of the trucks while driving and jumped into his accomplice’s vehicle. Police officers then chased after the driverless truck, managed to get inside, and eventually brought the truck to a safe stop.

Unfortunately, the officers lost sight of the thieves who, according to police, got into a BMW and sped away. The second truck was found a short time later near a hardware store. As a result of the police operation, all champagne bottles were seized. LVMH’s parent company, Moët & Chandon Champagne, has not yet commented on the incident.
