‘How to Train Your Dragon’ took the world by storm in 2010. The adventures of the chief’s son, Hiccup, and his feline flying dragon Toothless quickly captivated moviegoers and became a real box office success, followed by two sequels. Together, the previous film outings, which are based on books by author Cressida Cowell, have grossed $1.6 billion.
But the film series was not only well received by the audience, we at the FILMSTARTS editorial team were also impressed by the beautiful coming-of-age animated films. The first film even reached number 43 on our list of the best fantasy films of all time.
It’s no wonder that many fans were excited when news broke that a live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” was in development. And there was already a release date: the live-action dragons should also be trained on March 14, 2025. But nothing comes of this agreement.
Due to the ongoing actors’ strike, major film releases are currently being postponed – including in this case. The live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon” was delayed three full months and will now hit U.S. theaters on June 13, 2025. No German release date has been announced yet, but it can be assumed that the film will be released in our cinemas around the same time.
Here’s what we know about the live-action remake
So far, there isn’t much information about the planned live-action adaptation of the hit animated film. However, it is certain that the remake will also be about the chef’s son, Hicks, his girlfriend Astrid and their adventures together, because at least a cast is already present for these roles.
Hicks is played in the live-action remake by Mason Thames (“The Black Phone”), while Astrid is played by Nico Parker (“The Last of Us”). The director’s choice will have given fans a special reason to be happy, as Dean DeBlois will direct Toothless and Co.’s first three animated adventures. has already directed and is therefore very familiar with the subject.
If you want to shorten the wait until the live-action version hits theaters, you can currently find at least the first part with a subscription WOW* (formerly Sky Ticket).
