Expert: Mobile phone radiation is not necessarily responsible for sperm loss

Cell phone radiation is not necessarily the cause of poor sperm quality in men, nor is it a compelling indicator of fertility. Rita Rahban, a biologist at the University of Geneva, says men shouldn’t worry.

Rahban was the first author and co-leader of the study on Switzerland’s sperm quality, published Wednesday. “We wanted to investigate to what extent environmental factors can affect male sperm quality, and we found that young men who use mobile phones frequently are more likely to have lower sperm concentration,” he said in an interview with “NZZ am Sonntag”.

“But we have no evidence that cell phone use is the cause of low sperm concentration,” Rahban said. In this regard, the effect of environmental factors needs to be examined.

Controversial numbers

According to Rahban, sperm concentration cannot simply be translated into fertility. This depends on many factors, including the woman. The men examined in the study had an average concentration of 47 million sperm per milliliter of ejaculate. If the sperm count is over 40 million, fertility is not affected. “A man is considered infertile at just 1 million/ml,” says Rahban.

According to the biologist, it is certain that the sperm count in men has decreased compared to the past. But caution needs to be taken here too: “These figures are controversial because they come from the 1940s,” says Rahban. It must be investigated whether sperm counts are performed as they are today and whether similar populations are examined.

The study, published in the journal “Fertility and Sterility” on Wednesday, pointed out that it is not certain that cell phone radiation is responsible for poor sperm quality. (SDA)
