At just 21 years old, Albert Hughes co-directed ‘Menace II Society’ with his twin brother Allen, creating one of the black cult films of the ’90s. Over the years, works such as ‘From Hell’, ‘The Book Of Eli’ and most recently the ‘John Wick’ series ‘The Continental’ followed. When they appear on the podcast (through ) on the occasion of the promo for the series on Amazon Prime Video and a look back at his career so far, he also spoke extensively about Marvel.
Hughes revealed that he’s talked about superhero movies with Marvel “a few times” – most recently about a project he doesn’t explicitly mention, but which is very clearly and easily identified as the Blade reboot currently in development. But Hughes revealed he turned Marvel down every time. Bee “SheetUltimately, he didn’t make this rejection so easily because he was actually very interested in the character.
After extensive MCU analysis, Hughes said, “I would implode!”
During the previous investigations he had already had a rather uneasy feeling because he knew that it was ‘a system’ for which he would be working. But the requests were very “nice” and So in the most recent request, he went into detail about all the MCU films. He really started analyzing all the films – even with a spreadsheet. In the video for the podcast, he holds the various pieces of paper filled with tables into the camera. He compared, among other things, special effects; he was “really immersed.”
But he wasn’t even halfway through when he realized: “I would implode in the controlled nature of this world and not be able to do what I do anymore.”
He continued: “I don’t understand why a real filmmaker would want to be in this system,” But I don’t want this to be seen as a general scolding of colleagues. He understands that “up and coming people” are seizing this opportunity and that Marvel is doing a “good job” of finding them at the right time.
Hughes says: Kevin Feige is the “Daddy”!
What exactly he means by the “system” becomes clear from Hughes’ very long explanation clearly. For example, he distinguishes between ‘director’ and ‘filmmaker’. A director shouts ‘Action’, goes home after the job and occasionally visits the editing room. The filmmaker, on the other hand, is everywhere involved in ‘his’ film. And Marvel is looking for directors.
When he identifies himself as a filmmaker at Marvel, it also becomes clear in the course of the conversation: the producer. Of course he means Kevin Feige. His spreadsheet analysis also explored the question “Who is the daddy here?” And the result was clear – also with the clear realization: “Daddy never failed. The producer who made it [hier zeigt er im Video auf die Zettel mit seiner Spreadsheet-Analyse] is the most successful producer in Hollywood history with the most successful studio in Hollywood history.”
So we will probably never see an Albert Hughes Marvel film. Meanwhile, another director might take the opportunity to make his biggest film yet with “Blade.” Because instead of Hughes Yann Demange the job – and he falls squarely into the ’emerging’ category that his colleague mentions. The former commercial and music video director has been in the business for over a decade and has already made waves with films like ’71 and White Boy Rick. But of course they are both smaller projects that did not reach a large audience. A studio success with “Blade” could open completely different doors for him.
But first comes “Blade.” There have been several reports of problems with the project recently. Michael Green (“Logan,” “Blade Runer 2049”) is now the sixth writer known to have been hired by Marvel to pen the reboot.
“Sheet“According to the current schedule, the film will hit theaters on February 12, 2025.
