The organization in Hamburg said the animal costumes looked cute but caused stress in dogs and cats. “The costumes restrict the animals not only from their freedom of movement but also from their ability to communicate,” explained Karina Omelyanowskaya from Four Paws.

For example, if dogs’ tails or ears are covered with clothing, they can no longer communicate effectively. Accessories attached to costumes disturb the animals because they cannot get rid of them.

The organization believes people should be considerate, even if they’re dressing themselves. If you have a sensitive animal, you should not wear clothing that covers your face when you approach it. Facial expressions, masks and full-body costumes can disturb animals.

Constant knocking on the door and changing visitors are also stressful for dogs. Four Paws recommended keeping sensitive animals in a quiet room and distracting them with music. “If possible, you should turn the ringer down or turn it off completely,” Omelyanowskaya explained.

A tired and well-exercised dog is more relaxed and less susceptible to stress. “So before having fun in the evening, you can keep your dog busy with long walks and additional playtime throughout the day,” Omelyanowskaya suggested. (AFP)
