This paves the way for possible applications in fields such as healthcare or geriatric care, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne announced on Thursday.
EPFL said this development is very important for robotics because it marks the transition from hard robots to soft robots. “Our aim is to bring robots closer to humans,” said Josie Hughes of EPFL, under whose leadership the new robot was created.
“We hope that this soft robotic arm represents a future where machines support, complement and understand people’s needs better than ever before,” the researcher continued.
The new robot was presented to experts in the new “npj Robotics” magazine. According to the researchers, the basis of the development lies in the innovative architecture of the robotic arm. The researchers modified the spiral-like structure, called a helicoid, by cutting off parts of it. This makes it possible to precisely control how flexible or rigid the spiral will become in different directions.
To bring this first commercial soft manipulator to market, the researchers applied for a patent and formed a joint start-up called Helix Robotics.
