Five Latin American countries are among the finalists for the Zayed Prize

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s pioneering award for global and humanitarian sustainability, has announced this year’s finalists following consideration by a prestigious jury.

The awarded will be announced at the Zayed Sustainability Prize ceremony on 1 December during COP28 in the United Arab Emirates, the 28th Conference of the Parties United Nations Framework Convention on climate change, which will be held from November 30 to December 12.

In the Health, Food, Energy, Water and Climate Action categories, each winner will receive $600,000, while each of the six winning Global High Schools will receive up to $100,000 to start or further expand their sustainable project.

Jury of Zayed Prize for Sustainability selected 33 finalists among 5,213 Candidates from Panama, Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Rwanda and 27 other countries in six
categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools, which represents a 15% increase in nominations compared to last year.

New category Climate actionintroduced to commemorate the UAE Year of Sustainability and the UAE’s hosting of COP28, it received 3,178 nominations.

The finalists are an example of incredible ingenuity and unwavering commitment to shape a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet, said eDr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates United, CEO of the Zayed Sustainability Prize and COP28 Chair-designate.

In this 2023-2024 cycle, a record number of registrations was recorded from all continents, he said.

Through 106 award winners to date, 11 million people gained access drinking water sure, 54 million homes gained access to reliable energy, 3.5 million people gained access to more nutritious food and more than 728,000 people did access to affordable health care.

Several Latin American organizations and projects stood out as finalists in different Zayed Sustainability Awards Categories.

It is among them “New Seed”, non-governmental organization Guatemala that specializes in the development of biofortified corn seeds.

Also, “Foundation for the sustainability of the Amazon”, Brazilian non-governmental organization dedicated to the implementation of projects and programs that promote environmental conservation and empower communities of the indigenous population for the protection of their rights in the “Climate Actions” category.

Furthermore, in the category “Global High Schools”, representing America, find significant educational institutions such as the Colegio De Alto Rendimiento La Libertad in Peru, Liceo Baldomero Lillo Figueroa in Chile and New Horizons School in Argentina.

These are the finalists excellent examples of Latin America’s commitment to facing global challenges and working on them sustainable solutions for a more promising future.
