Research in Switzerland shows: Good sleep reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke

As Chuv announced Friday, Chuv and scientists from the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm) observed more than 15,000 people from France and Switzerland for up to a decade for the study.

At the beginning of the study and two to five years later, they calculated a score called the Healthy Sleep Score, which combines five sleep behaviors, for all study participants. A full score of five points was given to those who slept seven to eight hours a night, had no or rarely insomnia, and did not experience sleep apnea or excessive fatigue during the day. The occurrence of heart attacks and strokes was then monitored for eight to ten years.

Compared to people with a Healthy Sleep Score of zero or one, meaning they slept very poorly, people who scored two, three, four or five scored 10 (for a score of two), 19 (for a score of three), 38 (for a score of four). and a 63 percent (at five points) lower risk of cardiovascular disease, which includes strokes and heart attacks. The results were published in the specialist journal “European Heart Journal” on Friday.

“These results encourage us to take care of our sleep, just as we take care of our bodies,” study author Pedro Marques-Vidal of Chuv said in the hospital’s statement. “Short sleep is often associated with high productivity, but a person who sleeps well will reduce their stress and reduce cardiovascular risk factors.”
