3.5 billion kilometer journey for “Psyche”: NASA space probe set out for asteroids

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

Photographers prepare their automated cameras at the US spaceport in Florida to capture the launch of NASA’s “Psyche” spacecraft.

The start was postponed one day due to bad weather conditions. The probe, which is about the size of a tennis court with its solar sails deployed, was originally planned to be launched in 2022. But due to computer problems this did not work. Psyche must travel approximately 3.5 billion kilometers to reach the asteroid. The probe won’t get there until 2029 at the earliest.

Potato-shaped asteroid “Psyche” orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter. It has a surface area of 165,800 square kilometers, which is four times the size of Switzerland. According to preliminary findings, “Psyche” contains a lot of metal. The probe will explore its composition and give scientists insight into the formation of asteroids, planets and our solar system.
