In China, a self-flying air taxi manufacturer has received approval for the first time. (computer image)

Accordingly, the aircraft meets the “airworthiness requirements” and safety requirements for flights with people on board.

Applying for a type certificate is a long and expensive process. When permission is granted, it paves the way for the aircraft to be used by the public. CAAC said the model will now “subject to operational qualification tests and be formally put into commercial operation once it meets the requirements.”

“We hope to be the first in the world to start commercial operation of EVTOLs with autopilot in the short term,” Ehang founder Hu Huazhi told AFP. The English abbreviation EVTOL stands for electrically powered aircraft capable of taking off and landing vertically.
