The launch of the “Psyche” space probe to the asteroid of the same name should be postponed until Friday. (archive image)

“Psyche” was planned to take off from Cape Canaveral spaceport in the US state of Florida on Thursday afternoon (16:19) with the “Falcon Heavy” rocket of Elon Musk’s private space company SpaceX.

The launch of the probe, which is about the size of a tennis court with its solar sails deployed, was originally planned for 2022, but had to be postponed due to computer problems. “Psyche” needs to travel approximately 3.5 billion kilometers to the asteroid, so it won’t get there until 2029 at the earliest.

Asteroid “Psyche” orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter. According to preliminary findings, it contains plenty of metal. The purpose of the probe is to investigate its composition and thus give researchers a better idea of the formation of asteroids, planets and our solar system.
