“The Godfather”, “The Condemned” or “Hara-Kiri”? The world’s best lists are headed by several classics – and are also regularly shaken up by popular hits such as “Parasite” or “Spider-Man: Across The Universe”. For us at FILMSTARTS, however, another film has been the undisputed number 1 for years – which you now have to catch up on:
Alfred Hitchcock’sVertigo – From the realm of the dead‘leads the ultimate FILMSTARTS ranking of the best films of all time – and the best version of it is currently available very cheaply. Because as part of Prime Day, which runs until midnight today, you can get the film as a 4K Blu-ray for less than 15 euros – and a few other hits, which we will discuss later in the article.
While the Blu-ray of the film* is even available for only 5 euros, the author of the article strongly advises everyone with UHD equipment to go for the 4K version. Because even the already quite attractive Blu-ray looks quite old.
James Stewart, who blames himself for the death of the beautiful Madeleine (Kim Novak) and ultimately threatens to break – and fall into madness – forms the basis for the best thriller in Hollywood history. ‘Vertigo’ is not only supported by a story that makes you question your own sanity, but also by an iconic ensemble in front of the camera. Above all, master director Alfred Hitchcock knows how to fully utilize his excellent set pieces for his own purposes with staged refinement – thus taking you on an almost sleepwalking journey into the realm of psychoses and the loss of reality.
And the journey to the “Realm of the Dead” is certainly not the only cinema milestone that you can get in the best possible version at a particularly affordable price – nor is it the only Alfred Hitchcock classic…
These masterpieces are also worth seeing
Looking at the FILMSTARTS community rankings, is “Psycho“The best horror movie of all time. The basic “Bates Motel” is also available particularly cheaply in 4K – and is worth it, and not just because of the picture and sound quality. While the first edition on Blu-ray still includes the somewhat innocuous cut version, the UHD version (as well as the new Blu-ray) comes with the uncut version long thought to be lost:
Of “2001: A space odyssey“is also the best science fiction film currently available for little money. Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking space adventure is still considered the benchmark of all things science fiction for many critics, as well as for us at FILMSTARTS – and honestly, we can hardly imagine that this will change again at some point . In 4K, the elaborate and incredibly visually stunning production looks better than ever before.
It is also available at a discount according to our community Best adventure film of all time: “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade“ You can get them individually in 4K for just 17 euros. However, the author of this article immediately advises limited collection of 4 films*which also includes the first three Indy adventures – and currently costs less than 50 euros.
A look at our figures also shows: With an average rating of 4,647 stars is “Commencement“The best film of the past twenty years – if our users have their way. Christopher Nolan’s Mindfuck, between a sci-fi blockbuster and a psychological mind game, is also offered on Amazon Prime Day:
We would also like to make an unconditional recommendation for the best war film of all time: “Apocalypse now“ – albeit with a downer. Because while the UHD disc offers one of the most impressive 4K experiences in the world, the set also includes Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece in all three versions. Unfortunately, you currently have to pay the regular price for these – only these are available at a reduced price DVD*.
In the big one 4K promotion on Amazon Prime Day* Of course, you’ll also find many other classics and highlights, some of which are heavily discounted – so every film lover (with 4K equipment) should be able to find what they’re looking for. Unless you’re like the author of this article – and you already have most of the must-haves we list here on your shelf…
