TV tip: The super entertaining revival of one of the biggest blockbuster series of all time

It took many years and several attempts to continue the blockbuster series ‘Jurassic Park’, which was started in 1993 by mega-director Steven Spielberg and which fans thought was over and buried after 2001. When ‘Jurassic World’ hit theaters in 2015, the box office results exceeded all expectations.

In the US alone, the film starring “Guardians Of The Galaxy” hero Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard (“Spider-Man 3”) grossed $208.8 million in its opening weekend from producing Universal Studios . It achieved the best box office result of all time at the time, leaving behind the previous box office champion, Marvel’s “The Avengers”.

“Jurassic World” airs today, October 5, 2023 at 8:15 PM on VOX. If the time is not convenient for you, you can order the Blu-ray or DVD from online stores such as Amazon. The FSK 12 title is also available there (even in UltraHD!) as video-on-demand. Only for a fee, because it is currently not included in the subscription of any of the common streaming services.

Dinosaurs as drug sniffing dogs? A detour to “Jurassic World”

Joe Johnston (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) was in the director’s chair for 2001’s “Jurassic Park III.” However, Steven Spielberg remained on board as the undisputed mastermind of the series and as soon as it came out, he and his colleagues began developing a fourth installment. In 2002, they announced a screenwriter, later Oscar winner William Monahan (“Departed”), and planned to bring “Jurassic Park IV” to theaters in the summer of 2005.

However, in 2011, they were still no closer to starting the film. On the contrary: the project had already exhausted several director candidates (Johnston, for example, had dropped in and out several times) and other authors. Absurd plot ideas, such as that the US government should use trained dinosaurs to combat the global drug trade, were developed, but thankfully not developed further at some point.

It wasn’t until Spielberg and his production partner Frank Marshall (“The Bourne Conspiracy”) hired husband and wife team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (“Planet of the Apes: Prevolution”) to write the script, which in their view still lacked an adequate story, that finally momentum in the case? The second decisive step was the involvement of the previously very inexperienced director Colin Trevorrow (“Journey Of Love”).

These “newcomers” were finally ready to break away from the people they had grown fond of, but – let’s face it! – after three films to separate the main characters from their heavily exhausted predecessors and dare to make a truly new beginning. This was already reflected in the renaming of the project: ‘Jurassic World’ was born – a summer blockbuster that was certainly not perfect in every way, but still extremely entertaining.

Thanks to the resounding worldwide success of the reboot, the way was finally clear to continue the franchise. With a much more bearable interval of just a few years for fans, “Jurassic World 2: The Fallen Kingdom” and most recently “Jurassic World 3: A New Age” followed, which also won at the global box office.

That’s what ‘Jurassic World’ is about

The ‘Jurassic World’ adventure park attracts thousands of people from all over the world every year to an island off the coast of Costa Rica. Here, children can ride mini triceratops while parents watch a mosasaur eat white sharks for breakfast in the gigantic swimming pool. The dinosaurs seen here were all created by genetic researcher Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong), who works on behalf of billionaire Masrani (Irrfan Khan). Recently, Wu even created a reptilian predator that never existed in nature and that even puts the feared Tyrannosaurus Rex in the shade: the Indominus Rex.

This clone beast becomes the sensational new attraction of Jurassic World, but transforms into a formidable threat when it escapes from its cage. In the resulting chaos, many other dinosaurs, which are life-threatening to park visitors, also manage to escape from their enclosures. Among those in immediate danger are brothers Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins). Their aunt Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), the theme park manager, desperately tries to save the boys. She gets help from her ex-boyfriend Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), an idealistic velociraptor trainer…
