The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) states that Alzheimer’s disease affects 60 percent of the 32,900 cases of dementia registered in Switzerland each year. Every 16 minutes, someone develops Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. How can I protect myself from this?
Professor Gilles Allali, director of the Leenaards Memorial Center at Lausanne University Hospital, has been working on the human brain for years. He explains five things to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
one
We need to keep our brains busy. For example, with Sudoku, reading or crosswords. Allali explains: “One of the most important preventive measures is cognitive stimulation through the practice of mental activity. However, I recommend choosing a fun activity. “If the fun factor is missing, this habit will be harder to maintain in the long term.”
2
Leisure activities have a positive effect on the brain. “Dance works best because it is physical, mental and emotional at the same time.” Dance is also widely used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. A study published in 2020 in the National Library of Medicine proves the effect of dance. This leads to improvement in the posture and gait of people affected by the disease. This leads to major psychological changes and strengthened self-confidence in daily life.
3
According to Professor Allali, the important thing is this: “Move for 30 minutes every day. It creates a social environment. “In a community you experience different things and that helps you.” People who are isolated have a higher risk that their brains will eventually stop working properly.
4
Brain health also depends on food. The benefits of walnuts and salmon are not legendary. Professor Allali explains: “You should eat as much raw and natural food as possible and limit your alcohol consumption.”
5
What can everyone do to protect their brain? «Study and keep learning. Whether it is literature, history or mathematics. Creating new cognitive connections is an excellent way to reduce risk.”
