When real weekend rebels Jason and Mirco von Juterczenka were guests on our podcast Zauberliebe, they revealed that there are currently no contracts for a second part of “Wochenendre rebels”. But you also said that there is “plenty to tell” and that screenwriter Richard Kropf is interested in it. Director Marc Rothemund also told us in an interview that he could imagine “Wochenendrebanen 2”.

Some people familiar with the Weekend Rebels’ many works (books, podcasts, etc.) might already imagine that the real Jason, who will surely be heavily involved in a sequel, would have less interest in a movie about dating or girls . . We don’t have to speculate about this either. On the occasion of the cinema release, Jason and Mirco von Juterczenka were not only our guests, but also on other podcasts.
They were there too, among other things in football format to hear where Jason himself says that he has no interest in the topic of ‘romantic relationships’ and that he ‘doesn’t feel any attraction’. Jason probably doesn’t think much of the term ‘coming of age’ either, because it doesn’t seem right to him that the process of growing older, over which you have no influence, should now lead to him behaving and otherwise adjust.
No, ‘Wochenendre rebels 2’ will not exist as a coming-of-age romantic comedy. However, we already have three other ideas that could be incorporated into a sequel. After all, there is the real story of Jason and Mirco von Juterczenka, which should once again set the template. So we know what happens next. The only question is: where is the focus?
Idea 1: Travel abroad
A scene in the film already hints at a sequel with further football travels – but this time abroad: what happens if Jason doesn’t find a favorite club in the first three men’s competitions? Then you just have to keep looking in Europe. And the real role models continue to do so and also diligently attend competitions abroad (which was already in the first film with a trip to Latvia). These foreign trips will also play a larger role in her upcoming book ‘Chaos at Eye Level’.
Of course, with a story like this you have to make sure that it stands out enough from the first part, so that you don’t just tell the same thing in other places. But there are certainly plenty of new turbulences that father and son can still experience where they get into a lot of trouble and then come back together.
Idea 2: Research into chaos theory
In ‘Weekend Rebels’ it is already revealed that Jason is researching chaos theory. A second film could follow this and devote themselves to this subject. Various obstacles stand in his way create tension – for example when, as a young man, he has to fight to be taken seriously in the world of science.
Overall, Jason’s investigative work could provide material for a movie sequel. He is very concerned with the future of our world, the climate disaster and what we ultimately have to change – sometimes radically – in our lives if we want the planet to be livable for future generations. He has already written a book about it, “(T)raumschiff Erde”.
Idea 3: A (meta)adventure about your own success
We could imagine that too that “Weekend Rebels 2” is simply based on the fact that the real role models became known through their adventures. In reality, father Mirco eventually started writing these down in a blog. This resulted in the book ‘We Weekend Rebels’ – and for many years father and son spent a significant part of their travels not only to football stadiums, but also to reading their own book.
The fact that they have both been podcasting about it for years would sometimes have been part of the script for the first film and could of course also be incorporated into the second part. Or you can even get all meta and crazy and say a movie is being made of your life, so the second part is about how Film-Jason (Cecilio Andresen) and Film-Mirco (Florian David Fitz) deal with it – including the creation of a film-within-a-film. The biggest problem here is probably that for this film-within-a-film you would have to find a second young actor who can embody both Jason and Cecilio Andresen.
Of course, ‘Women’s Rebels’ must first be successful in the cinema
But one golden rule for all sequels is quite certain: Especially if the first part is successful, sequels will be made. So the audience has to go to the cinema en masse. According to forecasts, ‘Wochenendrebellen’ will have an opening weekend with around 100,000 cinema tickets sold. That’s a little weaker than you’d expect. But we also have a very warm weekend in large parts of Germany – possibly the last of the year with such temperatures. You can immediately see this in the cinema figures. In any case, whether or not it ultimately becomes a success will largely depend on how steady the film’s run is in the coming weeks.
While a cinematic sequel is in the stars, one will certainly be released as a book. “Chaos at Eye Level” is the name of the successor to “We Weekend Rebels” and should be largely based on the film, as Mirco von Juterczenka told us in the podcast, but also be thematically much broader. The start of a crowdfunding campaign for printing was actually planned for September, but has not yet taken place. This should be rescheduled soon.
