Not only is Dossenhütte’s location on the narrow Tossengrat in the Bernese Alps impressive, but the approach to the lodge from Rosenlaui is also quite challenging. You go from the glacier valley to the well-marked but challenging Alpine hiking trail and reach the hut via steps, signs, lanes and stairs. Once you reach 2,663 meters above sea level, your efforts will be rewarded with a magnificent view. The sunrise and sunset from Dossenhütte are spectacular. The next day the climbers continue towards Dossen. If you’re hiking, you can take the longer but gentler route to Urbachtal. You can enjoy the peace and quiet along the way in this beautiful valley, which is not used much because there is no public transport connection.

Domhütte is located above the Valais community of Randa. First of all, it is the destination of ambitious climbers who want to climb to the cathedral of the same name from here. This impressive mountain is part of the Mischabel Group and, at 4,546 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain whose entire base lies in Switzerland. But for sporty hikers it is definitely worth spending a night here, as the mountain landscape in front of the Domhütte stretches from the Breithorn via the Matterhorn, Zinalrothorn, Weisshorn to the Balmhorn in the Bernese Oberland. If 4.5 hours of climbing seems too long for you, you will find a worthy alternative further down in Europahütte. From Randa you can reach the beautiful cottage surrounded by larches in just over two hours.

Damma Hut is one of the smallest SAC huts in service and has retained its original character to this day. While huts in many places are becoming increasingly larger and more luxurious, the twenty-bed Damma Hut has remained true to its motto, “Small but beautiful.” The hut was exhibited at the Bern State Exhibition in 1915, dismantled a year later and moved to its current location at the foot of the Dhamma Mountain Range at the very tip of Göscheneralptal. Here it is, surrounded by the impressive Uri mountains. Dammahütte is part of the “5-Hütten-Panoramaweg” Alpine hiking route and can also be reached via ferrata. If staying one night in a shared dormitory is not for you, you can take a day hike from Göscheneralpstausee to Dammahütte and enjoy delicious homemade cakes.

The access to Cabane de Tracuit, on the edge of the Turtmann glacier in the Valais Alps, is one of the longest in Switzerland and requires a lot of fitness, as a good 1,500 meters of altitude must be overcome from Zinal. But it’s worth the effort. In 2013, the original hut from 1929 had to be replaced by a state-of-the-art mountain hut. This offers a unique view of the surrounding 4000-meter peaks from the dining room through enormous, light-filled panoramic windows: the perfect seat for sunset, when the mountain peaks turn pink and you can forget about the strenuous hikes. It’s important to reserve a place to sleep before climbing, because despite the long climb, Tracuithütte is one of the most visited SAC huts in Switzerland, with a total of 116 beds.

Guggihütte is one of the insider tips of the Bernese Oberland. While the surroundings of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are crowded with tourists from all over the world, a deep peace and quiet prevails in Guggihütte. The little hut stands out in the middle like an eagle’s nest on a rocky ledge. At the back it extends to the summit of Mönch directly above Nollen. A special mountain tour only for very good climbers. On the other side you can see all the way to the Lauterbrunnen Valley. If visibility is good you can even see Mittelland and Chasseral. The hut route starts from the Eigergletscher station and is marked in blue and white. It’s a steep climb and when you start the wall seems almost impenetrable, but then the beautifully landscaped path gradually reveals itself. It is very important to have solid feet when approaching this club. You will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Swiss Alps.

The cozy Carschinahütte is located in Rätikon on the Austrian border and attracts climbers, cyclists and hikers. It is also very popular with families thanks to its technically easy access options. In front of the hut is the highest sandpit, where children can try climbing on simple rocks for the first time. Behind the hut rises almost majestically the Sulzfluh, which can be climbed via the magnificent Via Ferrata. On the other side, the beautiful panorama stretches from Piz Kesch to Schesaplana. This view is simply magnificent, especially in the evening when the sun slowly sets behind the mountain peaks. Carschinahütte is also an ideal travel destination for those who enjoy traveling in the mountains with their four-legged friends. Dogs are allowed to stay overnight in the Holzschopf or in the lounge for an additional fee.

Among the many accommodation options in the Swiss mountains there are also a few extraordinary finds. Feudal SAC huts not only provide accommodation for mountain hikers, but also some small tents. These are primarily shelters and are not designed for longer stays. But in today’s world, this simplicity is a good way to step away from our modern day life and reduce it to the basics. One of these tents is the Bivouac du Dolent-La Maye (Val Ferret, Valais). The orange building resembles a spaceship and offers twelve beds. The camp can be reached in around three hours on foot from La Fouly, and apart from the peace and seclusion, the plus point of this accommodation is the view of the majestic Grand Combin, with an altitude of over 4,300 metres.
