Fabienne Hadorn (48) is part of SRF’s new comedy show “Show of the Month,” but she is no newcomer. She has been working as an actor, director and cabaret artist for over twenty years. Lucerne played a nerdy forensic expert at the crime scene.
Miss Hadorn, were you relieved after the first “Show of the Month”?
: Relaxed is the wrong word, but I’m happy to now have my mind free to work on my solo exhibition series “Kaboom Room”, which will debut in the fall. This was not possible before, we exchanged ideas and improved the content until the last second before publication.
How does such collaboration work?
This is teamwork. Renato Kaiser and Gabriel Vetter are the main authors. We, as moderators, can also try what works, how it works, and make suggestions.
And? Were you pleased with the first show?
Basically yes. But I think we can be much bolder, more unexpected and more spontaneous. But the team needs time to grow together. They are all very creative people. Also what I think is cool: We are all clowns originally from the country and then moved to the city.
Why do you think this is important?
Because this situation prevents the formation of rural-urban distinction. Because such contrasts naturally create tension and comedy.
How did the team come about?
I can only tell you about myself. I was asked for casting. Renato Kaiser knew me as the director of the satirical shows “Bundesordner” and “Kaiserschmarren” at the Winterthur Casino Theatre.
In the spring, women went on strike because BAV was planning male-only comedy shows. Do you feel like a quota woman now?
I thought about this very carefully. But then I thought: Someone has to do this. Definitely. I’m not young anymore, I’m well-established. I thought there were two possible outcomes: Either I go under. But then at least I’ll do Winkelried and set up the breach so other young women can come up, because comedy women on the big screen are a little more normal from now on.
Or?
Or I swim. And then I’m in a position where I can offer a platform to other women. Both are good. Win win.
Why are women less visible in the Swiss comedy scene?
Because of their viewing habits and because they don’t get enough platforms. By the way, I don’t want to blame only SRF in this matter, this is the problem of society as a whole. Like how women are reduced to just their looks, even in online comments… brrr. This doesn’t just happen to a man.
How do you deal with this?
Pragmatic. If I accidentally read one of these comments, I’ll stop immediately.
But there are already successful Swiss women. For example, Hazel Brugger.
Yes, of course. And very well deserved as well. When you talk to Hazel, it’s as if you can see her brain synapses firing rapidly in all directions at once. But in my opinion he is definitely an exception. I think women’s comedy often works a little bit differently, it’s more fun, it needs a little more room to grow because it’s not just punchlines following each other. For example, I’m currently working with Martina Hügi on her solo called “Octopussy”. A great verbal acrobat and observer of social hotspots. The truth is that there are a lot of women in the comedy scene. But often they don’t make the transition to the big screen or television. Or can you name five famous female comedians that come to mind?
To be honest: not a single one.
Equal. If you know anything, Americans Chelsea Handler, Amy Schumer or Melissa McCarthy may come to mind, then they are very rare. But at prestigious comedy festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland, the stages are full of funny women. In Switzerland you can see amazing comedians in the “Women’s Issue” or “Fintatainment” formats. Their inability to hit the big screens has financial consequences. Many comedy women in Switzerland or abroad live at or below the poverty line.
And you?
I can pay my rent. However, there is almost no security in this profession, even for established artists.
Last question: What is your solo show about?
It’s about all the 1000 ideas I’ve accumulated after 25 years of being on stage. It will be a crazy show with different guests every night because one night is not enough for all the materials I have.
Fabienne Hadorn can be seen in the satirical program “Show of the Month”, which airs every month on SRF. Next broadcast: October 29, 21.40 on SRF
Hadorn’s nine-part solo exhibition “Kaboom Room” opens at Millers in Zurich on November 10 at 20:00. More information: fabiennehadorn.ch
