Although “Star Trek” fans have been able to delve into the Enterprise universe with several series (e.g. “Star Trek: Enterprise” and “Picard”) in recent years, fans of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Co. still waiting in vain for a sequel to “Star Trek Beyond” or even a new movie. A fourth part was already decided in 2017, but a new screen adventure about the iconic Starfleet was always a long time coming.
Of course, the big question all ‘Star Trek’ fans are asking themselves is: can we still hope for a ‘Star Trek 4’? Former “Star Trek 4” screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer has now given an interview in conjunction with her upcoming prequel “Cemetery of the Cuddly Toys: Bloodlines” (out October 7 on Paramount+). about the status of production – and this should probably make fans very happy:
“Yes, the film is still on its way. I love this project, and it was another project I had to jump from to direct Cuddly Toy Cemetery: Bloodline. That was a difficult decision.”
Fans can continue to hope
“Star Trek 4,” which will further expand the series’ alternate origin story, is currently still in its very early stages of development. According to Lindsey Anderson Beer, there is a good chance that we will actually see the film.
Since Anderson Beer reportedly left the project, the film will no longer be based on her script. However, it is not impossible that parts of this script are copied.
But you definitely still have to be patient. The current strikes in Hollywood have meant that no one has been able to work on the project lately. We also know whether there is already a successor for Beer who will have to start.
The plan was actually for ‘Star Trek 4’ to go into production in the second half of 2022. Matt Shakman was originally set to direct. In the meantime, the ‘Cut Bank’ creator is taking care of the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ film, which will then integrate the superhero team into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Opposite Shakman explained this year: “I think what they’re still working on is a version of what I was working on during the time I was involved.”
Even if two artists here are talking about a film in which they are no longer involved, you can certainly trust their statements. Not least because they are certainly still connected to those in charge today. When we can expect the sci-fi adventure is uncertain given the very early stage of production. Not least because it is still not clear when the actors’ strike in Hollywood will end. Lindsey Anderson Beer’s words should still have a calming effect on many fans at this point.
