More than 50% of Dutch people are not considering a Chinese electric car
In 2022 and 2023, many Chinese electric cars came to our country. Not all of them can compete with European electric vehicles, but some are at least as good as the competition. Nevertheless, more than 50 percent of Dutch people do not want to lease or buy an electric vehicle in the country in the next five years.
This emerges from a study by ElektrijkeAutolease.nl among 1,000 Dutch people. Of course, what doesn’t help the image of the Chinese car is the European Commission’s ongoing investigation into illegal state aid, although not everyone likes to ignore Chinese electric vehicles.
A large proportion of the Dutch do not want a Chinese electric car
23.9 percent of respondents welcome the arrival of Chinese electric cars. A larger proportion, 32.9 percent, would prefer not to see cars from the Asian country in the Netherlands.
27.2 percent of those surveyed stated that they had moral objections to buying an (electric) car from China.
Buy a Chinese electric car in the next five years
What is striking is that only 15.1 percent agree with the statement: “I would think about buying or leasing a Chinese electric car in the next five years.”
33.8 percent gave a neutral answer to this statement. The vast majority, 50.7 percent, disagree with this statement. So we can say that the image of electric cars from the Asian country in the Netherlands is not (yet) very good.
It’s not just about quality
The fact that the quality of the cars themselves is not so important is reflected in the numbers. For example, many people believe that the Chinese brands are not inferior in quality or give a neutral answer.
Exactly a quarter of people would not buy an electric car from the country even if a Chinese brand delivered the same quality at a significantly cheaper price. Although 41.5 percent would do so.
