Hardly anyone expected this before the launch: ‘Troll’ from ‘Tomb Raider’ director Roar Uthaug really took off on Netflix in the winter of 2022/2023 and continued to flourish after a record start the most successful non-English Netflix film ever – well before films like ‘All Quiet in the West’ or ‘Blood Red Sky’ from Germany or the Spanish hit ‘Der Schacht’.
With 178.6 million hours watched or 103 million views (Netflix’s new benchmark for success) “Troll” is still #1 on this list today. That’s significantly fewer views than “Tyler Rake: Extraction” and “Tyler Rake: Extraction 2,” which currently rank 9th and 10th among the most successful English-language films with 135 and 134 million views, or even “Red Notice ” (with just under 231 million views at number 1). However, ‘Troll’ may have been significantly cheaper than these Netflix blockbusters.
“Troll 2” is coming!
This is also supported by the fact that ‘Troll’ is now getting a sequel, according to the American trade magazine first reported. “Troll 2“ is happening again Call Uthaug staged and some of the key people behind the camera return. How Espen Aukan will reportedly once again write the script and Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud will once again serve as producers.
In a statement, Uthaug said it had been a lifelong dream to make the first “Troll” film and called the Norwegian film’s global success “incredible.” Producers Horn and Sinkerud have already indicated what will happen next in “Troll 2”, Another story revolving around a Norwegian fairy tale character is planned.
In “Troll,” which received a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars from FILMSTARTS author Lutz Granert, a gigantic stone monster comes to life and flattens everything in its path. At the end of the film, the titular monster is defeated. However, a mid-credits scene hints at a new threat emerging from the Norwegian mountains – whether it’s another troll or another legendary figure, we’ll have to wait and see.
Fans of “Troll” don’t have to wait too long, though: loud Filming for “Troll 2” is scheduled to begin in 2024Depending on when exactly, a Netflix launch in late 2024 or 2025 at the latest could easily be possible.
