I tried DRUG EGGS. Am I addicted now?

Olivier Baroni

The tip came from the editor-in-chief: «Drug eggs! People, DRUG EGGS!”said deputy editor Marius Egger during the morning meeting. ‘Have you ever tried something like this? This is the latest megafood trend. It must be incredibly good.”

Olivier! Do you know?

No, Oliver doesn’t know that. But Uncle Google is already here. And lo and behold, on TikTok at least it seems to be a trend – there are millions of views on the keyword «Mayak eggs»:

Apparently “mayak eggs” means something like “medicine eggs”. They are as addictive as drugs, as irresistible.

The specialty comes from Korea, where they are often eaten for breakfast, they say. That’s why I’m writing to my Korean friend in the hope of gaining some more insight into the matter:

Ha.

Anyway, after watching a few TikTok videos, I have to admit: yeah, it looks pretty good.

That’s why I want to test it: DRUG EGGS – are they worth the hype?

The ingredients list may vary; But there are always some constants. Here are mine:

Hey, you’ll have to experiment a bit with the quantities yourself. Due to my creeping chili addiction, I may have used a little too much chili (especially considering the spiciness increases during marinating). Anyway Mix all the ingredients for the marinade and get something that looks something like this:

Beautiful, isn’t it?

Which brings us to the preparation would be:

Boil eggs: The Add a little salt to the cooking water and 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar add (this should make peeling easier). And then – this is how all the instructions instruct us – the Eggs straight from the fridge Add to boiling water and 6 minutes long cooking. Then in the ice bath let cool completely. This is how you get those typical ramen eggs: the ones with the jammy yolk. Mm.

Carefully peel the eggs…

…be careful not to break the egg white. Not like me 🙄.

Then the eggs go into the marinade and DAMN THIS LOOKS COOL I LOVE IT!

Now leave the eggs Let it marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours, but preferably overnight. This is what it looked like to me the next morning:

To eat Serve the eggs over steaming jasmine riceand sprinkle some more marinade over it.

(I’ve also made bok choy in oyster sauce as a side dish – it takes less than 2 minutes.)

Hey, yeah It’s extremely good. Thank you, Marius!

A drug? Well, I guess this is the usual TikTok hyperbole culture that has spawned this terminology. But yeah, yeah – it’s fine! Definitely going into my standard recipe repertoire.

By the way: for Swiss eggs size M (approx. 53 g), 6 minutes in water is apparently a few seconds too long. As you can see in the photo, the edge of the yolk is a little overcooked:

(But still fine.)
