It’s okay to refill empty glasses in a restaurant if the bottle of wine hasn’t been drunk yet. But what many people don’t appreciate is that it recharges very quickly. It often creates a rushed atmosphere and gives the impression that increased sales take priority over guests’ well-being. Fees tied to sales can make the problem worse. When placing your order, if you say that you only want a glass of wine or that you do not want another glass of wine, trained service personnel must respect your request.

If the wait staff wants to refill the wine too frequently, you can decline by politely but firmly saying: “No thank you, please do not refill the wine for now.”

You place your hand over your wine glass as you try to refill it. This signal should be easy to understand.

Explain to the service staff that you would like to serve yourself and the people accompanying you at the same table.

If your finished bottle is stored in an ice bucket, turn it upside down. Alternatively, you can re-cork the empty bottle.

Put your wine glass out of reach: You can place it further in the middle of the table to make unwanted refills more difficult.
