It’s always the same dilemma: I put off getting ready for the upcoming holiday until the last minute. I usually book a break well in advance. Then the day of departure approaches – just one more month, just two more weeks, just one more week, just one more day. Big countdown. The expectation is rising. And yet my luggage ends up in my baggy suitcase a few hours before my departure.
From where? Because I am afraid. Fear of forgetting something, not having enough with you, or packing the wrong thing. So I postpone this mission as long as possible! But to be honest, I usually end up buying so many new things that I pay almost no attention to what I bring with me. On the way back, I always face the same problem – the suitcase is too heavy and my companions, who somehow manage to travel with only ten kilograms, have to miss a part of me with them. At this point: Thank you all for always being there for me when I don’t want to take my shopping achievements on vacation.
Before I travel, I often discuss with my girlfriends what they prefer to do: pack up for vacation or unpack when you get home. Many agree on the first, while the second seems like a much easier task to me. Logically, being prepared for something good raises even more expectations for many. It just gives me goosebumps. In these moments, I always wish I had a superpower: to be able to teleport everything I need right now.
So my answer is clear: I prefer to unpack it again. I usually do this when I get back. It’s a sad job – everything has to be put in place, washed and dried, folded away – but much easier than packing.
While I don’t look like a packaging guru, I have a few tips on hand. Admittedly, I can’t always follow all seven recommendations, but at least I’m trying.
As the saying goes: the early riser catches the worm. If you start packing earlier, you’ll finish earlier, and if the light flashes in between, you can change a few things in an emergency. A valuable tip, but I don’t like myself. I will gladly accept this.
Before my grandma goes on vacation, she always makes a carefully noted list of items and reviews it in her spare time. In other words, he never forgets anything, he thinks about everything. I have observed this since childhood. He has the same list to this day, and I admire his discipline because when I start a list, I only remove it occasionally.
My biggest helper: I think while collecting clothes. What goes with a pink skirt, what about a colorful one-shoulder top? If you already know what you will combine with which outfit, you will not fill your suitcase too much and you will not have to study while dressing.
Large jars that are still full and heavy often end up in the vanity bag. Anyone who packs cosmetics in small containers or uses mini products right away has a lighter makeup bag. You can also take with you almost empty bottles that you can throw away during the trip. Note: Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion are available in many hotels.
For many years I have been rolling my clothes instead of folding them. Not only do they take up less space in the suitcase, they also don’t crumple.
If you want to pack a lot, you have to use every centimeter in the suitcase. In other words, fill in all the blanks. For example, you can stuff big shoes with socks or put bikinis in hats. You can also put other things in the pockets.
Hand to heart: I’m still having a hard time with this! This is one item on the list that I can’t really fulfill. It’s always good to have a few extra pounds on the trip so there’s still room for a souvenir or two. Whoever collects goods to the limit will not do himself any favors on the return journey. Trust me, I’m speaking from experience!
